Belco hopeful about power restoration

Almost 1,000 homes regained electricity yesterday but just over 4,000 out of 25,000 were still without power by late afternoon.

Last week, the Bermuda Electric Light Company predicted the whole Island would be reconnected by the weekend beginning on September 27 and this coming weekend the company will reassess that target.

Belco spokeswoman Linda Smith-Wilson said the company may have more optimistic news, but it could not be guaranteed.

She urged people without power to go to relatives or friends with electricity and said Belco will target those people who genuinely had nowhere to go as first priority in restoration.

As of Monday morning, the St. George's Police Station was without power as Belco carried out work in the area.

Yesterday the phone lines were also out of service. Anyone wishing to contact the St. George's Police station should do so by calling 295-0011. In emergencies, call 911.
