The Bermuda Regiment was stood down yesterday afternoon after three days of operations covering Hamilton, Dockyard and the airport.

Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith thanked them for their contribution during the tense days after Tuesday's carnage in America.

He added: "I would like to thank the public for their understanding as they faced extra security measures at the airport, cruise ships and the American Consulate."

Regiment commander Lt. Col. David Gibbons said co-operation between army and Police had been aided by familiarity due to working together during the Hurricane Erin alert at the weekend.

He said: "I am very pleased. The attitude of the troops was exceptional and it gave a clear message that the public was secure."

And he said the presence of the troops was appreciated by tourists.

"We had people offering TVs to boost the morale of the guys."

Lt Col. Gibbons said some lessons had been learned and he said the lack of showers for those based in Number One shed in Hamilton would be addressed as some troops had not been given the chance to return to Warwick to clean up.
