After several house fires in the last week the Bermuda Fire Service has issued a warning to the public about the safety when using candles.

Spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell said at least three house fires in the past week that were caused by a candles being left unattended. "In order to safeguard your family while waiting for electricity to be restored, we urge you to follow these basic safety rules," said Lt. Lovell.

lBurn candles inside a one foot circle of safety, an area free of anything that could come into contact with the flame and burn.

lNever leave candles unattended - always stay in the same room when a candle is burning

lMake sure that candles are out of reach of children's and pets

lAlways use and appropriate candle holder on a stable heat resistant surface, such as a table

lKeep burning candles away from drafts, vents and air currents

lExtinguish a candle if it smokes excessively or the flame becomes to high.

lShould you burn more than one candle at a time space them at least three inches apart.
