A woman was injured in a three-car pile-up yesterday afternoon after a Police car tore through a red light on an emergency call.

The Police car was travelling north down Cedar Avenue with emergency sirens and lights activated when it hit the junction of Cedar Avenue and Dundonald Street. Police spokesman Dwayne Caines was unable to say where the car was travelling to.

Witnesses told the lights at the junction from east and west were green, while the Police car was travelling against a red light. It is understood that a white Mitsubishi Pajero jeep, about to travel west through the junction, stopped on hearing the Police sirens. However a grey Renault Clio which was travelling east through the junction was not so lucky.

The Clio collided with the Police car in the middle of the junction, pushing the Police car into the stopped white Pajero jeep.

With no skid marks in the road, bystanders surmised the driver of the Clio did not hit her brakes in time, although that has not been confirmed by investigators.

Brothers Eric Cabrall, 12, and Andrew Cabrall, 11, were painting inside Woodmont Nursery school on the junction of Dundonald and Cedar Avenue when they heard the collision.

?It was a loud crash,? Eric said. ?It all happened at once, so it was twice as loud.

?As soon as I saw it, I did a double take. I couldn?t believe it had happened. Everyone inside (the nursery) came running out.

?The lady (in the Clio) said she was trying to stop.?

The driver of the jeep was uninjured but the driver of the Clio was taken to the hospital with leg injuries. The Police officer was not said to be harmed but was taken to hospital for observation.
