Boos and bottles formed the Bermuda welcome for St. Kitt's singer Pat Ross when she performed at the Byron Lee concert on Saturday night.

The crowd interrupted the singer's first song and the din increased as she ploughed on until a bottle smashed on stage and she had to cut her set short.

Ms. Ross said: "This is my first visit. I am astonished."

Promoter Eddie DeMello said: "She was being backed by Byron Lee's band. Someone threw two glass bottles. A couple of the guys were shaken up because the bottles smashed very close to them.

"I was right at the back and didn't see it. It all happened so quickly. It was over in seconds. I feel very bad for Miss Ross. It's not a nice thing to happen. Bryon Lee was very upset about it."

Mr. DeMello continued: "He said in all the years of entertaining all over the world a he has never seen anything like this happen. He said what can you do?"

He said Mr. Lee, who has been coming for eleven years, had yet to say whether he would return.

"I hope he's going to come back. We haven't really discussed it. He was very well received. It was supposed to finish at two but at two twenty they were still boogying."

Mr. DeMello said two men had sought out Miss Ross to apologise to her on behalf of the people of Bermuda. "She was very touched."

He said she was surprised that some people could be so nice while others could be so rude. He added: "That's Bermuda."

Miss Ross said she would not be deterred from coming back to Bermuda said Mr. DeMello.

"Every year we have guest artists, we have tried to be diverse and have a different kind of music but now we are finding that isn't working.

"The people who go to see Byron Lee shows are so hyped up to hear soca they don't seem to want to hear anything else."

He said the crowd had been well behaved apart from the Ross incident with no arrests made.

"Believe it or not it was the best year as far as damage was concerned. Usually the fence is cut, this year it was intact.

"I want to thank the Police for a great crowd job."
