Police drop probe into alleged collision

Police have dropped any further investigation ? due to a lack of evidence ? into an alleged collision on Tobacco Bay Road last Saturday between Deputy Speaker of the House Jennifer Smith and two US tourists.

In a press release, the Police Service said investigations into the incident were complete after investigations revealed conflicting accounts from eye witnesses present at the scene.

?There is an absence of evidence that the car and the livery cycle came into contact with each other as described by the tourists,? the release said.

?An independent eyewitness to the collision has provided a statement in which she says the livery cycle fell to the roadway some five feet distant from the car and the evidence indicates that the livery cycle was loved prior to Police arrival.?

New Jersey couple Ronald Carvalho and his wife accused the MP and her male companion who were travelling in a silver convertible of speeding and throwing them from the cycle, and then laughing at them as they lay in the road writhing from the pain of their injuries.

Mr. Carvalho who suffered from a broken collar bone said he was shocked at the MP?s attitude since she never emerged from her vehicle to offer assistance.

In the release Police said an experienced Traffic Collision Investigator expert had also attended the scene and considered all of the physical evidence available in the case.

This week however, one witness said Mr. Carvalho was shouting profanities and that was the reason for the Dame?s reluctance to offer a helping hand.

Eyewitnesses at the scene could not confirm if Dame Jennifer was speeding in her vehicle, however, another witness said the tourists were driving cautiously but it seemed as if a case of bad timing had led to the alleged collision between their cycle and Dame Jennifer?s car.

All witnesses confirm Dame Jennifer did not offer any assistance to the visitors. The Bermuda Police service extended their sympathies to the tourists involved in the accident and wishes them a speedy recovery from their injuries.
