The Opposition United Bermuda Party (UBP) yesterday welcomed the new Government's commitment to greater transparency.

"It's something we've always been calling for and I will certainly support the Premier," said shadow Health Minister Michael Dunkley.

"You can rest assured we will be holding him to his word."

Premier Alex Scott this week said that, in the interest of transparency, a number of old government-ordered reports will be released soon.

"I do welcome it and we hope it's not just false promises again but time will tell," Mr. Dunkley said.

But he disagreed with the Premier's statement that while the Berkeley construction project was running late it will be completed within budget.

"I can't see for the life of me that that project is running on budget but we will find out at the end of the day."

He said the Auditor General's annual report which is normally tabled in June should be released first.

That report has not yet been released because Parliament was prorogued for the general election when it was ready to be tabled.

Mr. Scott had indicated that the Auditor's report would continue to indicate that the Berkeley project was being managed properly.

Yesterday Mr. Dunkley downplayed the significance of the report.

"Auditors reports are just making sure that an operation is running according to generally accepted accounting principles," Mr. Dunkley cautioned.

"So if anyone is looking at an auditors report, they shouldn't expect to get much about the efficiency of an operation or any other aspect that it may deal with. The real recognition of the success or failure will not be seen by looking at an auditor's report."
