Fresh concerns have been raised about the possible health hazards of working at the Police headquarters at Prospect after a recently conducted study revealed a high level of mould in the atmosphere.

The buildings affected include the Serious Crimes, Narcotics and Commercial Crimes offices. According to one report some officers are planning protest action following the revelations. But Kevin Christopher, the vice president of the Police Association, said that while the affected officers had expressed concerns, the union had not been officially informed as to what their next step would be.

He explained that the buildings were tested at the request of the officers who work in them because they had in the past been suspected of causing mysterious illnesses.

"It might just be coincidences but when you consider the history of illnesses among Policemen then there's cause for concern," said Sergeant Christopher.

The affected areas have to be given a complete scrub down to get rid of the old and carpeting removed.

"The study didn't say that people need to move out but it did raise concern as to the level of old in the building," said Sergeant Christopher when asked whether working in the buildings posed a serious health risk.

But he said the issue was slated to be discussed in ongoing contract negotiations. Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith could not be reached for comment yesterday.
