The United Bermuda Party's Michael Dunkley convincingly retained his seat in the house with a 498-to-284 win over first-time Progressive Labour Party candidate Neville Tyrrell last night.

In all, a total of 782 constituents turned out to cast votes at the polling station at Elliott Primary School. Of that total, there were three spoiled ballots. Some 1,040 people were registered to vote in the constituency.

"I think I canvassed very hard and got a good read of the people and it turned out just about how I'd expected," commented a jubilant Mr. Dunkley, who became the first ever MP for the new Devonshire East constituency.

"I entered politics knowing that there could be surprises, but as I've found out, just like life, if you do your homework, then you can limit your surprises. And I am very pleased that the people of Devonshire East have given me the opportunity to serve them.

"Election period is one of the most enjoyable moments in politics because the people really want to talk politics.

"So you get to have some really good discussions with them to find out what they want, and where they are dissatisfied - and that's very healthy for a politician."

"I feel good about it," Mr. Tyrrell said. "I know that I covered my bases and did everything. But it was all up to the people, and the people spoke today and I can't say anything more then that."

When asked whether would he run again, Mr. Tyrrell replied: "To be honest I really can't say at the moment. First, I have to get over tonight. But it's not all about 'Tyrrell'. It's about us winning this government."
