Tropical Storm Franklin is a threat to Bermuda ? and could grow into a hurricane.

Bermuda Weather Service meteorologist Elizabeth Harris said the storm could pass within around 100 nautical miles of Bermuda on Monday night.

Franklin's projected wind speed of 60 knots is only four knots below hurricane strength at 64 knots.

Ms Harris said there was the chance of Franklin growing into a hurricane but there was a heavy westerly sheer which was actively ripping it apart. Franklin could also get caught up ahead of a cold front pouring in towards the Island, which could sweep it away from the Island quite quickly.

Last night the storm was moving towards Bermuda at 8 knots, but was expected to increase speed.

The Weather Service will issue a Tropical Storm Watch this weekend saying maximum winds of 34 to 64 knots could possibly affect Bermuda if Franklin gets closer.

"Keep an eye on the track and forecast wind speeds," Ms Harris advised.
