A total of 75 candidates are now signed up as candidates for the July 24 poll. Included among that number are three third party or independent candidates and 36 candidates from each of the two main political parties.

The surprise of the day was the announcement of a new political party, the Gombey Liberation Party, whose sole candidate Gavin Smith was nominated to run against the Premier and the Opposition's Kenneth Bascome in St. George's North.

Aspiring MPs had between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to officially confirm their candidacies yesterday, which was Nomination Day.

According to a statement from the Parliamentary Registrar Sabrina Phillips, the day went smoothly as planned and all candidates' documents were in order. Mrs. Phillips said that, as the General Election draws closer, she encourages members of the public to "know who their constituency representatives are and where their polling stations are.''
