Police discovered a man lying unconscious outside a Front Street night club early yesterday morning after another attack said to be connected to gang activity by a witness.

The witness, who said he did not wish to be named, said: "Some young guy got knocked out.

"The only thing I can gather is that a Somerset youth in the town area just wouldn't behave himself in the City and got jumped.

"They told him to get in his car and go home and he didn't."

Officers found the man while responding to the report of an attack outside Club 40 at about 3.25. a.m.

An ambulance was called but the victim regained consciousness by the time it arrived and refused medical treatment.

Last night Club 40 owner Kevin Burrows said the attack on the man definitely did not take place inside Club 40 but outside the Supermart.

He said there was a party on the premises and he had contacted a Police officer to request a presence in the area because of "all the problems that have been happening over the last couple of weeks".

"He assured me that the night watch would be patrolling the area which they did do."

The incident follows a mini-riot involving between 30 and 40 people outside the Escape Nightclub early last Saturday.

The clash saw a young man, Jermaine (Mayonnaise) Lovell, hospitalised after allegedly being shot with a stun gun in what witnesses said was a battle between rival gangs "town" and "country".
