The site for a memorial for those lost at sea will be built at Great Head Park in St. David's, it was announced this week.

Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown said the site had been chosen following an exploration of the whole Island.

St. David's, he said, seemed to be an appropriate place because of the community's seafaring roots.

"It is indeed fitting that the committee has found a site within this part of Bermuda which at its very core represents the spirit of those men and women who have through various circumstances come to be lost at sea," Dr. Brown said.

Earlier this year two men lost their lives at sea after their fishing boat, New Nuts overturned in Bermuda waters. It was that tragedy which inspired plans for a memorial. Micah Battersbee and Allen Edness' lives will be remembered, along with the other men and women, through the memorial, Dr. Brown said.

"There are areas of the park, where the view overlooks the ocean, which we believe will provide an environment of calmness, tranquillity and solace, where loved ones can come together and remember those lost," Dr. Brown said.

It is not yet known what the memorial will look like but Dr. Brown said the artistic community had been called upon to make suggestions.

The Minister said that many calls had been made from members of the public concerning information about Bermudians who had lost their lives at sea and he encouraged the public to call 295-3130 with information regarding the memorial.
