The Department of Parks has stepped in to save the day for residents who use the park on Parsons Road.

Grass at the city park is so overgrown that one resident joked that a small child could be completely lost in it. The man who refused to be named, lamented that the growing pastime of children feeding ducks there has ended because of the high grass.

?One area is well kept while the other is so bad with grass so long,? he said.

Director of Parks Candi Foggo admitted that one section of the park was in bad shape. But she explained that the overgrown area fell under the Department of Works and Engineering.

?We?re responsible for the area from the playground to the fence,? she said. ?The area around the basketball court is a Works and Engineering project,? she added.

Ms Foggo explained that the company who carried out the work for Works had not lived up to their contract and that her department had urged Works to hold the company liable.

?We had said we don?t want them to turn it over to us until it?s at a level where it can be maintained,? she said.

Apart from overgrown grass, there are four dead casuarina trees and a dead cedar tree which need to be removed from the site, Ms Foggo said. Once the trees are removed those areas need to be reinstated with mulching.

?There have been ongoing issues with maintenance of the basketball court,? she said but pointed out that a fence cut last year, had finally been fixed.

With summer almost here and the weather conducive to park activities, Ms Foggo said her Department has agreed to come to the rescue.

?Parks will secure the services of another contractor to help this project come to completion,? she said. She explained that Parks cannot do the work as it has a tight schedule and other areas would have to suffer.

?The parks are maintained on a six to eight week rotation,? she said. ?Separate crews come in to clear trash more regularly.?

Ms Foggo explained that Works and Engineering will be handed the bill for the cleanup. Works will in turn deduct that figure from the bill of the company that failed to fill the contract.
