Almost 700 Pembroke and Devonshire residents were hit by power outages yesterday morning.

Electricity was disconnected at about 6 a.m. Belco spokesperson Linda Smith said almost all 680 customers had power restored by 8. 30 a.m. except for the National Stadium, Government's Water Depot and the traffic lights, all on Frog Lane, Devonshire who were reconnected by 1.05 p.m.

She said: “The power went out at 5.59 a.m. and was due to a fault in an underground cable at the bottom of Dock Hill (Devonshire).

“The fault was at the point where the underground cable comes up onto a pole.

“It was probably previously struck by lightning and the rain this morning probably entered the cabled and it expanded causing it to short out.”
