International cooperation to nail crime was pledged at the opening of a meeting of Caribbean Police at the Sonesta Beach hotel on Tuesday.

Bermuda Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith told the Caribbean Region Security Conference that criminals and terrorists crossed borders at will and Police services around the world would have to follow suit.

Public Safety Minister Terry Lister said Policing was even more important after recent terrorist attacks.

He said: "Even Police in our little corner are being asked to be global cops."

The Minister said the conference was another step towards full representation in Caricom, the Caribbean common market.

Governor Sir John Vereker said the curse of drugs couldn't just be solved through law and order at home but needed global cooperation to cut out producers and traffickers.
