Tourism Minister Renee Webb presented the draft United Nations Resolution from the Women in Public Life Conference in Bermuda last October to British Ambassador Adam Thompson at the United Nations last Wednesday.

The resolution calls for a greater role for women in conflict resolution, involvement in the peace process and for work to counteract violence and discrimination against women in the workplace.

Ms Webb said: “I am very pleased to have been able to personally present our draft UN Resolution to the UK Ambassador.

“I am confident that it will help strengthen existing UN work to ensure that women are given wider opportunities to display their talents and attributes.

“I was also able to inform the Ambassador about our plans to hold a World Summit on Women's Issues in May, 2004 and to solicit his help in ensuring the appropriate UN Agencies are kept abreast of our work in Bermuda.”

The committee, which consists of both Government officials and private sector representatives, to organise the World Summit on Women in Public Life is already meeting to plan the event which tales place at the Fairmont Southampton in May next year.
