Police officers in Bermuda are trying out a new purpose-built vehicle to assess its suitability to the Island's roads.

The Vauxhall Astra car, which comes complete with a secure cell in the rear, is being driven by members of the traffic unit at the moment.

It is in use in the UK and other jurisdictions and may become a regular feature of the service if it meets the unique needs of the Island.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said the car would be making the rounds to each of the divisions during the coming weeks.

He said: "If it's successful, we may see more of them. It is being tried out now. It has been specifically designed for Police work, including things like the suspension and the wheels."

As well as the separate cell compartment in the rear of the vehicle, where suspects can be transported to the station after being arrested, the back seats are also made of a durable plastic to limit damage by suspects.

In the sound-proof cell compartment, nothing can be stashed under the seats, such as weapons or drugs, and the whole back section can be hosed down, inside and out.
