Why you should be a donor

The demand is far greater than the available supply. In the United States, 17 people die daily while waiting for an organ transplant. In Bermuda, there are 25 people waiting for an organ transplant, up from 16 in 2002.

High survival rates. The survival rates for transplants are about 95 percent for kidney recipients, 85 percent for liver and heart recipients and 75 percent for lung recipients.

Organ donation does not happen until after brain death occurs. US law clearly states that the doctor who pronounces brain death must have nothing to do with the removal or transplantation of organs.

Live donations are increasing. If you have a friend or relative awaiting a transplant, get tested to see if you are a match.

Anonymous donations, as in Cory Lowe's case, are rare but increasing. Anonymous donors must undergo a rigorous range of health and psychological tests.
