Bermuda yesterday saw the temperature plummet to one of the lowest on record for April 7 with weather experts recording a low of just 54 degrees at midday.

Meteorologist at Bermuda Weather Service James Morrison said it was not the coldest April 7 on record, but said it was not far behind.

On the same day in 1975, the Island recorded the lowest temperature for that date with a reading of 53 degrees.

Mr. Morrison said the drop in temperature was due to strong northerly winds that brought cold air to the Island from Canada.

And with the cold air came heavy showers, making for a wet, cold morning and early afternoon for Bermuda. However, once the rain had passed, he said it did not take long for the temperature to rise again, reaching 63 degrees later in the afternoon.

It was a stark contrast from earlier last week when Bermuda reached temperatures of 74 degrees and rising humidity. Mr. Morrison said: "The low was at noon. We had a shower and it dropped to 54 degrees and then the temperature jumped up to 63 degrees an hour later.

"It was one of the lowest temperatures on record for April 7, but not the lowest.

"Everyone was getting used to the humidity and then this cold snap arrived. At North Rock we had winds gusting up to 30 knots. But in spring and autumn we have very mixed weather. It's a transition period."
