A man due to be released from Westgate Correctional Facility on Saturday appeared in Magistrates' Court on Friday to answer a separate charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a 15-year-old girl.

The 27-year old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will be tried in Supreme Court as the charge is indictable. He therefore did not have to enter a plea.

Crown counsel Wayne Caines made "serious and strenuous" objections to the man's bail, however the defence lawyer Craig Attridge argued successfully for the man's release .

After deliberating for about 45 minutes, Acting Magistrate Will Francis decided to release the man on $10,000 bail with like surety, on the stipulation that the surety was not the man's mother. If the man's father was to act as surety, on the other hand, Mr. Francis deemed that acceptable.

He did, however, stress to Mr. Attridge that the man's father should be warned being a surety was a very serious responsibility, and that he stood to lose $10,000 if his son disobeyed the bail conditions.

The bail conditions also required the accused to report to the Police every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and for him to have no contact whatsoever with the defendant. Papers will be served within four weeks, and the defendant will appear for mention in Magistrates' Court again on April 16.
