Powerboat champ Roberts gets trial date

A trial date has been set for a champion power boater accused of conspiracy to import drugs and his co-accused, a St. Vincent national.

Kirk Thomas Roberts, 40, of Sandys, and Alphonso Cyril Holder, 37, of St. Vincent and Grenadines will face a Supreme Court trial on June 11.

The two men are charged with conspiring with others not before the court to import cannabis, estimated to be worth more than $100,000 into the Island on or between an unknown date and December 19, 2000.

They also face charges of possession, possession with intent to supply and possession of drug equipment charges.Roberts - who is free on bail pending the trial - appeared in court with a black patch over his right eye. The Royal Gazette understands the shipwright and powerboat racer is in danger of losing his eye following a work-related accident in which he sustained a number of injuries.

Holder has been held on remand at Westgate Correctional Facility since December 2000.
