Magistrate fines illegal pedlar

A street vendor who sold his wares illegally on a sidewalk in Hamilton was fined $50 in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Crown counsel Sharika Dill, told the court that Buford Smith, 41, of Ballast Point Road, St. George's was seen on November 28, 2003, on the corner of Court and Dundonald Streets selling clothes and jewellery.

Police asked Smith to produce a valid pedlar's licence but he said he did not have one.

Angrily, Buford told Police to "go back to their own country" and that he "knew the law".

He also said that Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves had signed something saying it was all right.

But in Court, Mr. Greaves quoted the Hamilton Traffic and Sidewalks Ordinance 1988 to fine Buford $50.

Smith also owed $500 in outstanding fines that he had to pay right away or go to prison.
