Bermuda received praise in Sunday's New York Times for recovering so well from Hurricane Fabian.

Writer James Grant, who is a frequent visitor to Bermuda, said that considering the 20,000 downed trees and millions of dollars of structural damage the recovery had been speedy and well co-ordinated.

He wrote: "The Bermuda Regiment, the colony's local military force, joined with public employees and volunteers to clear streets of debris and restore electricity.

"Within 24 hours, Bermuda International Airport was receiving private planes, and inside of a week, power had been restored in most of the country.

"Now, with significant renovations largely complete and the return of much of the island's lush foliage, new visitors may not believe the stories of the hurricane's wrath."

He noted golfers will find the island's eight courses verdant despite the occasional ragged palm.

"And, while Hurricane Fabian's enormous energy removed tons of sand from beaches here, nature has also been quick to restore.
