Decision day for Daniel's Head Village

A decision is expected today on the future of Daniel's Head eco-resort following crisis talks yesterday.

A meeting was held involving principals from the Somerset holiday resort, which is owned by Excel Legacy Corporation, the Bank of Butterfield, Bermuda Land and Development Corporation and the Department of Tourism.

Lawyer for the resort Wendell Hollis said, as a result of the talks, an announcement would be made, probably today.

He said: “Meetings were held and a final outcome was not reached, but it's expected that a decision will be made soon - possibly tomorrow. I can say no more than that at the moment.”

The Royal Gazette reported last week that Daniel's Head would not be opening for the summer season, as planned at the end of March. Staff were told that the opening would be delayed by about a month.

However, there was some concern that the environmentally-friendly holiday village would not re-open at all under the present management and ownership.

Whether Excel Legacy, which is based in San Diego, wishes to retain the resort, sell it, or find additional investment for it remains to be seen.

All workers who were due to start working there later this month, many of whom were expatriate workers who had returned to the Island from overseas, have been told there will be no positions at the moment.

Only a skeleton staff, amounting to about five people, remain on the site.

Yesterday, a spokesman for Excel Legacy said the company was not in a position to comment at this stage.

Daniel's Head tented-village opened about 18 months ago.
