Tourism Minister's comments cause anger in the Highlands
A foreign worker is so tee-ed off with Tourism Minister David Allen's claims that Scots are mean, he has written a letter to The Royal Gazette on a toilet roll.
As Mr. Allen unveiled last year's tourism figures showing a more than 20-year low of 458,814 visitors last week, he managed to offend Canadians and Scots by saying there is a belief “out there that Canadians are like the Scots are known to be careful with their money, but the Canadians stay longer and they are loyal to Bermuda and they have declined nothing like the rate the Americans have”.
A Paget-based Scot has failed to see the light side of Mr. Allen's sideswipe at his countrymen and has sent one of the most unusual letters the editor has ever received.
Signing himself ‘C.U. Jimmy', he writes: “I apologise for sending you this letter as it is - unstamped, without an envelope, and written on the cardboard inner tube of a roll of toilet tissue.
“Why, I hear you ask? Well, as the Hon. Mr. David Allen recently pointed out, it is because I am Scottish and therefore ‘careful with my money'.
“What a truly inspired comment to make at the same time as unveiling the worst tourist statistics that this beautiful island has seen in over two decades.
“I wonder how many Scottish people will now move Bermuda to the top of their holiday wish-list as a consequence. But then, since they are so ‘careful with their money,' perhaps he is trying to dissuade the Scottish tourists from visiting Bermuda. A masterful plan, sir!
“Mr. Allen's razor sharp insight into the traits of the Scots is as keenly observed as the wise man who deduced that ‘everybody who wears glasses is intelligent'.
“So I ask you, Mr. Allen, in addition to you being a bit more careful with Bermuda's money in the future, please also be more mindful of your words, should you not wish the tourism slump to continue apace. Oh aye, and kindly remove your glasses."
