The terrorist scare which led to the evacuation of part of London's Gatwick Airport yesterday did not affect any of the Bermuda flights.

Police cleared the North terminal shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday when a 37-year-old Venezuelan man on a flight from Caracas was arrested with a live grenade.

But the British Airways flight to Bermuda, which uses the North terminal, took off at 3.04 p.m., before the evacuation was completed.

The terminal was re-opened at 7.45 p.m. GMT and the scheduled BA flight to Gatwick left last night on time at 8.35 p.m..

BA's Bermuda spokeswoman Sallie Singleton said last night that flights scheduled for North terminal were being diverted to South terminal, so the Bermuda-London service would probably have gone even if North terminal had been closed.

An extra 1,700 Police were drafted in to help the Army in patrolling London's Heathrow Airport for a third day yesterday as Britain responded to intelligence reports that Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network was planning terrorist attacks.
