Government is spending $250,000 on refurbishing the Police firing range.

Commissioner Jonathan Smith confirmed construction on the range at Cooper's Island is well underway and the facility will be opening in mid-March.

The range, formerly used by US Troops stationed in Bermuda, is being recommissioned after being closed two years ago due to decay.

Since it was shut, the Police's Emergency Response Team have had to use either the small Police range at the Prospect headquarters or the Bermuda Regiment's facilities.

And Mr. Smith is pleased that the elite Police unit will soon be able to work at the purpose-built facility.

"It will provide an outdoor range for our ERT," Mr. Smith told The Royal Gazette.

"We have been in full consultation with the Ministry over this and it was decided that we needed a facility that met our unique training requirements.

"It is an absolute necessity."
