BERMUDA'S long jump champion, Arantxa King, just sneaked into the final of the IAAF World Junior Championships yesterday in Beijing, China with a leap of 6.14 metres.
Teenage King, who won the IAAF World Youth Championships in Marrakech last year with a jump of 6.39 metres ? still her best to date ? will now try and win the gold on Saturday in the field of a dozen jumpers.
Yesterday King managed 6.11 metres in her first qualifying jump and then slipped back a bit with her second jump of 5.44 metres. Then in her third jump she leaped 6.14 metres to become the last qualifier for the finals.
King, who lives in Massachusetts with her family, will be up against it tomorrow as yesterday six athletes jumped longer than her personal best.
