Calcium & Vitamin D are integral to healthy bones
The mineral calcium, vitamin D and sunlight are integral to the formation of strong healthy bones. The three elements are interrelated as sunlight is one of the best sources of vitamin D.
Vitamin D in turn plays a major role in calcium absorption. It allows for calcium to leave the intestine and enter the bloodstream it also works in the kidney to help reabsorb calcium that would otherwise be excreted.
Recognising the importance of calcium and vitamin D many foods are fortified with them. Milk, considered to be a naturally good source of calcium is often fortified with vitamin D. Today many types of bread contain these nutrients. Most recently Tropicana orange juice has produced a version that is fortified with calcium.
The recommended daily dose of calcium varies with age. In Bermuda health authorities advise the following:
