Courier service ZipX Bermuda is moving its US-based air express facility from New York state to Delaware.

The company said that it means savings for customers because Delaware is a sales-tax-free state.

Previously ZipX customers were given a Jamaica, New York, mailing address and retailers would apply a 9 per cent sales tax.

But as of Thursday, ZipX customers will need to use the new Delaware mailing address and the sales tax will no longer apply.

The Jamaica, New York, facility will remain open until November 15 to allow ZipX customers a grace period to switch their mailing addresses, after which any packages sent to the New York address will incur additional shipping costs and delays.

Kevin D Smith, managing director at ZipX, said: “We are always working hard to lower costs for our customers.

“This move to Delaware helps our customers avoid the 9 per cent New York sales tax, which can amount to a sizeable fee, especially when purchasing more expensive items.

“For example, for a Smart TV that costs $1,000 the New York sales tax would be approximately $90.

“ZipX customers have been provided with the new Delaware mailing address in advance, and we will keep our Jamaica, New York, facility open to receive goods up until November 15 to allow for a grace period during this transition.

“We encourage all customers to update their mailing address with their regular online retailers and delete the Jamaica, New York, address from any autofill fields on their web browsers to avoid any confusion when placing new orders from October 7 onwards.”

Customer service manager Lisa Furtado said: “We are here to make the transition as seamless as possible for our customers and anyone with questions is encouraged to reach out to our dedicated Delaware move hotline, 294-1790.

“New customers are encouraged to sign up via our website www.zipx.bm/signup and to download the ZipX app to upload invoices and track packages.

“We have worked hard over the last year to move as much as possible online to minimise face-to-face interactions and ensure the safest possible experience for our customers during the pandemic.

”Packages can also be delivered to your door for $5 island-wide via contactless delivery.”
