People vaccinated against Covid-19 but who later died from the disease were old and already very sick, the Chief Medical Officer has revealed.

Ayoola Oyinloye said that 16 per cent of the island’s deaths were fully immunised.

Dr Oyinloye added: “People who are dying have serious organ compromise and were already teetering … because of their organ failure, or people who have not been able to mount adequate immune response to vaccinations, and that’s what we’re seeing as a rule.

“What we can summarise is the people who have been vaccinated and are dying from this disease are older, very sick patients.”

Dr Oyinloye added that the vaccine lowered the risk of serious illness – but did not provide full protection.

He said at the Covid-19 briefing on Wednesday: “It’s safe to say that people who are dying who are vaccinated are older and sicker.”
