Thompson brings All-Stars to earth

An 80th minute Kenny Thompson blast earned North Village Rams a hard-fought 2-1 win over St.George's All-Stars at Wellington Oval on Saturday.

The win, Rams' fifth of the season, also saw them catapult to the top of the Commercial A Division standings after fellow frontrunners MR.Onions and defending champions Robin Hood battled to a 1-1 draw at Bernard Park.

Poised in third position heading into the weekend, Kevin Grant provided Rams with a solid start when he converted in the tenth minute to give his side a 1-0 lead.

But 20 minutes later the home team drew level after Terrance Carlington penetrated the Rams defence. The teams remained deadlocked 1-1 at the interval.

All-Stars did well to contain a Rams offence that has bagged 20 goals in six matches in the second half but they failed to find an answer for Thompson who popped up to score his team's winner ten minutes from full-time. Rams' second-half substitute Jeremy Salaam received a yellow card.

At Bernard Park, the long awaited showdown between Onions and Hood fizzled out to a tame draw. A 14th minute Derek Stapely strike saw Hood lead 1-0 at the half but a costly early second half blunder by Hood's 'keeper Randy Darrell allowed Richard Helm to pounce and earn his team a share of the spoils. Hood's Craig Smith and Onions Kael Coen both received bookings after becoming involved in a minor spat. Both teams also remained undefeated.

Elsewhere in the division, Lobster Pot climbed from sixth to fourth position in the standings after a convincing 6-1 drubbing of Prison Officers at Malabar.

Jeremy Leese helped himself to a hat-trick to spearhead Pot's charge while Darren Choonucksing, Richard Phinn and Eamon Crowe supplied the fruit to the pudding by rounding off the rout.

Officers replied through Donald Norford who scored only his team's second goal of the season. And although Officers have now conceded 54 goals against so far this season, if it is any consolation, they can boast that they have yet to have a player booked.

Tuff Dogs also moved up a spot to sixth position after handing Vasco Mariners a 3-1 defeat at BAA Field. Geoff Sousa gave Tuff Dogs the lead after only 13 minutes before Jeff Franklin doubled the visitors lead moments before half-time.

William Henderson then gave Mariners a glimmer of hope when he pulled one back in the 76th minute. But Jason Floyd put the match well beyond Mariner's reach in the 89th minute to ensure Tuff Dogs their third win of the season.

Tuff Dogs' Dennis Mussen and Floyd each received bookings along with Mariners' Henderson.

Key West Rangers also picked up their third win of the season to inch up a spot to seventh place after handing BAA Wanderers a third loss at BAA Field.

Referee Tracy Adams also encountered "excess markings" on the pitch before the match had started but still allowed play to get underway.

Rangers led 2-0 at the half thanks to an early Vernel Cann strike in the sixth minute and a 30th minute Craig Critchlow tally before further second half goals from Tillman Darrell and Sergio Griffin blew this affair wide open. Jahmall Mills replied for Wanderers. BAA's Glen Dyson received a booking for dissent in the second -half.

In B Division action, PHC Raiders blasted Devonshire All-Stars 5-0 at Shelly Bay to remain both undefeated and three points ahead of second placed Dockyard Falcons.

Keith Bell laid the foundation for Raiders win by scoring two goals while Chris Furbert, Mark Wade and super-sub Orion (Jah T) Thomas - who came off the bench to keep his goal-a-game streak alive - each contributed to All-Stars second loss of the season.

An ugly post-match incident involving Somerset Eagles Shane Proctor soured what had previously been an exciting free-scoring affair at Malabar where second placed Dockyard Falcons preyed on Eagles 8-4.

After receiving his marching orders from referee Ronue Cann in the 65th minute, Proctor was allegedly involved in an incident with a fan after the match. It is understood the incident occurred after Ireland Rangers' officials had asked the player to leave the ground.

Blake Outerbridge bagged a hat-trick while Lee Correia grabbed two-goals to spur Falcons to their fifth win of the season.

Others contributing in the home team's win were Roger Williams, Junior DeSilva - who notched his seventh goal of the season - and second-half sub John Pacheco.

Eagles replied through Paul Humphreys, Eddie (Giggs) Calendar, Proctor and Joe Moniz and despite suffering their third loss still managed to hold down third spot.

Tempers also boiled over at nearby Somerset Cricket Club where Extros' Michael Corday and Wolves' Keith DeShields were both sent off for fighting in the second half.

Extros prevailed 4-2 thanks to double strikes from Troy (Starsky) Thompson - who bagged his ninth and tenth goals of the season - and Edgar (Dillie) Smith which put an end to the home team's two-game losing skid.

Shannon Tuzo and Horace Landy replied for the visitors who have still yet to savour a win.

At Shelly Bay, Valley picked up their second win of the season after outscoring Devonshire Lions 6-5.

Troy Simmons led the scoring for Valley by grabbing two goals, while John Parfitt, Kevin Isaac, Eddie Smith and Chevon Armstrong each chipped in with a goal apiece. Lions' Derrick Weeks replied with a double strike of his own while Shivaughn Smith, Raynell Richards and Kevin Bean also got in on the high scoring act - albeit in a losing cause.

Also at Shelly Bay, Prospect/Fire managed their second win of the season after trouncing Pest Control 5-1. There was no further information on this match.

Commercial action resumes this weekend.
