Victory tastes good for the Onions

MR Onions took full advantage of idle Robin Hood by handing Commercial Division bottom dwellers Prison Officers a 5-1 drubbing at Shelly Bay last Saturday.

The win, Onions fifth of the season, saw them replace Hood at the summit - who for the second week in succession had their scheduled match against Tuff Dogs called off because of an unprepared pitch at Bernard Park.

Keith Donald led the charge for Onions by bagging a superb hat-trick while Andrew Bray and Steve Smith completed the rout which saw Officers' record their eighth consecutive loss. Officers replied through Kevin Hannah.

Fellow division frontrunners North Village Rams failed in their bid to take over top spot when they were held to a scoreless draw with BAA Wanderers at BAA Field. Rams remain in third spot, one point adrift of Hood who now have two matches to make up.

Bermuda Football Association officials stated yesterday that all make-up matches will be rescheduled for the new year.

Key West Rangers, meanwhile, continued their steady climb up the standings when they coasted to a comfortable 5-2 win over Lobster Pot at St.John's Field.

Saturday's contest was the third meeting between these two rivals in three weeks as the pair had to endure 240 minutes of FA Cup first round action last month before Rangers finally prevailed 2-1 in the replay.

Des Minors, Rangers' FA Cup hero, was again the toast of the town after he grabbed a sensational hat-trick, while Craig Critchlow also evidently had the midas touch after helping himself to a fine double strike.

Saleem Mukuddem and Troy Berkeley tallied for Pot who slipped down to fifth spot.

At Shelly Bay, St.George's All-Stars picked up their third win of the season when they edged past Vasco Mariners 3-2. There was no further information on this match.

In B Division action, Somerset Eagles handed league leaders PHC Raiders a 3-1 defeat at White Hill Field - Raiders first loss of the season. Eagles took an early lead through Marc Bean in the 20th minute but all their hard work was undone three minutes later when former Zebras' strike ace Kenny Burt drew the teams level.

Eagles managed to regain the lead moments before the half-time interval through a Paul Humphrey tally. Dion Minors then put the match far beyond Raiders reach when he converted early in the second half.

Despite the loss, Raiders maintained a four point lead at the top of the standings while Eagles remain in fifth position.

Devonshire All-Stars, meanwhile, battled their way into second spot when they managed to edge by eight-man Prospect/Fire 5-3 at Shelly Bay.

Jeff Richardson, Shawn Spencer, William Benjamin, John Corday and Germano Botelho all converted for All-Stars while Dwayne Smith and Neil Tunnacliffe replied for Prospect.

At BAA Field, Wolves Pack pounced all over injury-ravaged Dockyard Falcons 6-3 en route to their second win of the season. Falcons were reported to have played with only eight men due to a severe injury crisis. However, Wolves were unsympathetic to their plight with Shannon Tuzo leading the pack with two goals while Danzel Stovell, Horace Landy, Marty Lema and Mandy Thomas also found the mark. Duane (Box) Derosa (two goals) and Anthony (Berker) Burchall replied for Falcons who slid down to third spot.

At Shelly Bay, Pest Control moved into sixth place after dishing out an 8-1 hammering to Devonshire Lions, while a late Troy (Starsky) Thompson equaliser earned Somerset Extros a 1-1 draw and a share of the spoils against Valley at Somerset Cricket Club. John Parfitt tallied for Valley.

Commercial action resumes on January 4.
