Bermuda’s women’s team is in Dominican Republic for the Concacaf Under-20 Championship which began on February 25 and runs to March 12.

Bermuda, who won Group A of the qualifiers last fall in Curaçao, will play their knockout match in the round of 16 tomorrow evening (7pm) when they meet Guatemala at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo.

At stake for the winners will be a place in the quarter-finals next Tuesday against the winners of the group match between Puerto Rico and St Kitts.

Bermuda are boosted by the presence of six players from the senior team which played recently against Jamaica and Cayman Island in Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifiers in Jamaica and Bradenton, Florida.

From that squad are goalkeepers Terinae Trott and Zahkari Turner, defenders Koa Goodchild and Zemira Webb and midfielder and forward Emily Cabral and Katelyn Medeiros. Goodchild and Cabral are again the co-captains of the team.

Naquita Robinson, the head coach on that trip with the senior team, is with the Under-20 squad again, this time as assistant to Vance Brown as their roles have reversed, with Brown one of the assistant coaches with the senior team.

Bermuda was one of four teams advancing to the knockout round from the qualifiers last year, and they will be joined by the top three teams in the four groups in Dominican Republic.

Guatemala made certain of winning their group after edging bottom team Cuba 3-2 in their last match on Wednesday. Guatemala finished with seven points from two wins and a draw and were joined in the knockout stage by Haiti and Jamaica from group H while Cuba finished last and were eliminated.

The top three teams from this tournament, including the two finalists and the winners of the third place playoff match, will advance to the 2022 Under-20 Fifa World Cup later this year as the Concacaf representatives. The tournament will be hosted by Costa Rica who have qualified automatically as the hosts.

Bermuda squad:

Goalkeepers: Terinae Trott, Samantha Davies, Zakhari Turner

Midfielders and forwards: Jahde Simmons, Trinae Edwards, Emile Cabral (co-capt), Marli Butterfield, Che’-Chulae’ Dowling, Azari Easton, Sanaa Simmons, Jahni Simmons, Ramiah Brangman, Ashely DaSilva, Katelyn Medeiros
