Successful applicant to be announced

has been chosen to run the coffee kiosk at the Bermuda International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

It is understood that one of the four proposals submitted for the concession has been recommended to the Minister but the application has to receive Caucus approval first.

"We have reviewed the applications and made a recommendation,'' said Airport Operations manager Jack Gordon, "it's up to the Minister to confirm that recommendation or not.'' Permission to operate the coffee selling operation came up for grabs a couple of weeks ago after Mr. Furbert pulled a coffee vending concession which had originally been awarded to a company belonging to his wife and her family.

Although Mr. Furbert defended the initial decision -- which drew a storm of protest from other would-be Airport coffee vendors as well as the Shadow Transport Minister Dennis Lister -- Mr. Furbert said that in hindsight, he should have told his wife not to accept the request to provide a temporary coffee and drinks service because it could lead to the appearance of a conflict of interest.

According to Mr. Furbert, four or five applications were received to operate the coffee business, and his wife Ulene and her relatives -- Valerie Robinson James, Arthur Robinson Jr., Edward Robinson, Shawn Furbert and Marie Robinson Fain -- were not among them.
