Bermuda endured a disappointing start to the Concacaf W under-17 Championships, after suffering a 7-0 defeat against Jamaica in group F at the at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in the Dominican Republic today.

Bermuda fell behind in the eighth minute as Maya Raghunandanan broke the deadlock, with Avery Johnson doubling the advantage just four minutes later.

Building on that momentum, Jamaica added a third in the 16th minute through Tiny Seaton as Bermuda found themselves with a mountain to climb at the interval.

That task was made even harder just moments after the restart as Tyesha Nelson struck a fourth before Raghunandanan scored her second on the night and Jamaica’s fifth to add further salt in the wounds.

Refusing to rest on their laurels Jamaica continued to pour forward with Shaneil Buckley adding the sixth goal before Natoya Atkinson wrapped up proceedings with seven minutes remaining to cap a dominant display.

Bermuda will be aiming to make amends when they face Canada tomorrow, before concluding the group stage against hosts Dominican Republic on Thursday.

Despite the disappointing start to the tournament, Bermuda will still have high hopes of reaching the knockout stages, with the top three teams in each of the four groups progressing.

The knockout stage of the competition, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third place match and final, will all be played in a single match, direct elimination format.

At the conclusion of the event, the champion, runner-up and third-place finisher will qualify for the 2022 Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup in India in October next year.
