Hakuna Matata Lions extend unbeaten run

Hakuna Matata Lions remain the only unbeaten team in the Bermuda Softball League after Mike’s Trucking and Western Stars Angels fell to defeats.

Hakuna made short work of Raggamuffins with a 17-2 victory in a B Division clash. AJ Durham (3-4) and Shannon Raynor (2-3) both drove in four runs in the win, while team-mates Jacob Hines and Scott Barnes were both 3-4, with Hines having two triples. Trae Stevens was 3-3 and drove in both runs for Raggamuffins.

Team Smokey’s 24-15 win over FIU Scared Hitless was marked by a moment of silence for former firefighter Jevanie Fubler, who passed away in 2013. Tahirah Hill was 4-4 at the plate, but her team-mates Albert Ramirez (3-3) and Gerald Simons (3-3) were also perfect at the plate. Tawana Lee and Kyle Ball were both 3-4 in the loss.

Mike’s Trucking dropped from the unbeaten ranks with a 17-14 loss to the Five O’s in the C Division. Five-O’s picked up nine runs in the first two innings to put the brakes on Trucking.

Adam Mattall led the way with homers in the first and second. Mattatal also hit a home run in the fifth. Leadoff man Khalid Pitcher (4-5) and Kisa Wade (5-5) also helped spark the shock success. Ray Martin and Jaylen Martin were both 4-4 in the loss for Trucking.

Mike’s Trucking rebounded later in the week when they beat the Corporation of Hamilton 24-15 as they piled up 18 runs in the first inning. Sam Outerbridge (3-4) drove home four runs in the win. Jari Ming (5-5) was the mean reason this game was as close as it was.

KillaWhat had more than enough power to down Oddballs 25-16. Leadoff man Troy Hall hit for the cycle (single, double, triple and home run). Hall scored four runs as well as hitting two home runs.

George Fubler (5-6, five runs) and Mike Smith (5-5, four runs) also had an impressive outing for the winners. Kyle Harvey, Jeff Chisnell, Perry D’Ambrosio, Brian Lewis, and Tyler Bordeau were 3-5 for Oddballs.

Super Express overcame Butterfield & Vallis 14-7. It was a case of lucky sevens for Express as they scored that amount in both the second and sixth innings. Chay Carlington (3-4) impressed as did Garic Swainson and Dennis Joell who were also both 3-4. Quincy Bean (3-4) and Aaron Madeiros (2-4, HR) were the top batters for Butterfield & Vallis.

Western Stars’ unblemished record in the Women’s Division took a hit when it lost 9-2 to Rainbows.

Terrific defence and timely hitting were the keys for Rainbows as Adrienne Smatt, and Stephanie Aaruajo were both 3-4. Leadoff batter Keisha Eve had two of the Stars’ six hits while scoring a run.

PHC Zebras beat Hardknockz 14-9, thanks to a six-run second inning. The Zebras took advantage of 14 free passes issued to them. Akanke Parsons had two of PHC’s six hits, and Parsons and Tawanna Lee both drove in two runs. Sarah Robinson (4-4), Rasheen Durrant (3-4), and Vanessa Paulos (2-3) were all impressive at the plate for Hardknockz.

In the A Division, Moongate Brewers edged past Paraquet Flyers 23-21 in a top-of-the-tables battle.

Flyers scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to force this game into extra innings after Andrew Simpson (3-4) hit a bases-clearing double to knot the score.

Moongate used a series of walks and single to pile up a big inning before Mike Sakota’s (3-5) grand slam put the hammer down on the Flyers.

Sommers Cox (2-3) plated four runs for Paraquet. Fully Loaded Allstars beat X-Bats by a single run in a 20-19 thriller. Allstars scored ten runs in the last two innings to mount the comeback.

Steve Simons (4-4) had a massive three-run homer to help Fully Loaded overcome X-Bats. Team-mate Shaquille Trott (3-4) also helped with the come-from-behind victory.

While Dan Andrade (4-4) was the big hitter for X-Bats, Deepah Popat, Mike Trebing, and Brett MacGillivey all had productive turns at the plate.

Blue Wahoos blanked The Kings 16-0. Chris Coelam (3-4) led the way for Wahoos, with Matt Katsch, Jeremy Etsy, and Shane Matchett all going 3-4. Matt Inglemann was 2-2 for the Kings.
