Stage set for Conor White and Caitlin Conyers to complete sweep of national titles

Dominant duo: Conor White, left, and Caitlin Conyers will be aiming to win a third national cycling title in as many weeks

Conor White and Caitlin Conyers will be out to complete a sweep of national titles ahead of the CG Insurance Criterium Championships tomorrow.

As well as reigning supreme on island, White is also relishing the opportunity to wear his national colours in all disciplines overseas as part of his CS Velo team jersey.

“To win all three titles in the same year would be pretty nice,” he said. “I went a long time not winning any of them, so I’m looking forward to having the chance to win that final one as well.

“My main target was always the time-trial and I set myself the goal of being more competitive in the road race as well.

“As well as having the chance to win all three titles, what makes it more exciting is the fact that I would be able to fly the flag overseas in any of my races with my team.

“If you are a national champion, you can wear your national jersey in races and my team have already said they were preparing a time-trial one for me. If I can win the criterium as well, it would mean I could wear my Bermuda colours in any of the races that I do.”

While Conyers will be the undoubted favourite heading into the women’s race, White’s hopes of adding another title to his collection have been boosted with the notable absence of the bulk of his main rivals.

Kaden Hopkins, whom White pipped to victory in the previous two championship races, is not set to compete, while Dominique Mayho has been forced to withdraw through an injury suffered in a crash last weekend, and Nicholas Narraway, Liam Flannery and Alexander Miller are representing Bermuda at the inaugural Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe.

Despite the absences of his chief rivals, White is refusing to underestimate the remaining competition or the race itself.

“A lot of the top riders will be off island this weekend but I know full well that I still have to do what is needed to win the race,” he added.

“People might think it will not be as strongly contested, but I know I still have work to do. The main difference is that people will look at me to go out and dictate the race, but it certainly doesn’t change my preparations at all.”

Ongoing roadworks have forced a change of course for the race with a switch being made from Hamilton to St David’s Motorsports Park.

While it could provide a more technical course for riders, White remains unfazed by the challenge, having discovered a new-found confidence in his technical ability to go with his undoubted power on the bike.

“I’ve always been able to rely on my strength, but I also feel my technique has come on a lot for criteriums because of the races I’ve been doing overseas,” he said.

“Racing in the United States, I’ve done so many different course layouts that I think it’s really improved my cornering; I’m able to take them a lot faster.

“The more technical, the better because that could play even more into my hands.”
