Somerset Cricket Club (Somerset Bridge won toss): Somerset Bridge beat PHC by ten runs

Shawn Riley and Kieron Richardson starred with bat and ball respectively to lead Somerset Bridge to victory over PHC at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.

Bridge’s decision to bat first almost backfired as they lost two quick wickets cheaply before opener Riley found an able partner in Jason Smith.

The two mustered a 43-run third-wicket partnership to carry the score to 45 before the former was bowled by PHC captain Dev Hanuman for a team-high 27 featuring two fours and two sixes. Bridge were 51 for five after ten overs.

After losing wickets cheaply, late-order batsman Samir Tavares enjoyed a partnership with Shane Hollis (12) to carry the score to 93 before he was bowled by Hanuman for 22 to close the Bridge innings in 18.2 overs.

Hanuman was the pick of the PHC bowlers with four for 19 from 3.2 overs.

In response, Richardson captured two wickets in his first two overs as PHC could only score 23 for the loss of two wickets in their six overs of power play.

Opener Kevin Lambe offered some stubborn resistance as he batted sensibly to try and stabilise the PHC innings as he watched wickets fall around him.

PHC were 35 for three at the halfway mark. Lambe and Dionte Dowling produced a healthy 26-run partnership to try and push the score along before Dowling ran himself out looking for a quick single for 14.

Lambe soon joined Dowling in the pavilion in similar fashion after a mix-up with new batter Kaya Robinson for a team-high 28 runs with the score 63 for seven.

Robinson and tailender Darrien Gibbons caused some anxious moments as they put on a quick 20-run partnership to move the score to 83 before the former was dismissed leg-before.

PHC needed 11 runs from the last over but Noel Woods had other ideas as he bowled Gibbons on his second ball for 13 runs to end the game.

Richardson claimed three for 19 while young Khymi Richards had two for six from two overs and was also responsible for the two run-outs.

“It got a little close in the end,” said Bridge captain Adrian Burrows. “We have some youngsters in the team, so a bit of inexperience but overall a good game. The bowlers stuck to their task and carried us through.”
