Somerset Cricket Club (Somerset Bridge won toss): Willow Cuts beat Somerset Bridge by 27 runs

Ras Solomon Burrows scored a half-century in his first league game back from national duty to lead Willow Cuts to a 27-run victory over Somerset Bridge yesterday at Somerset Cricket Club.

Burrows came in at fifth wicket down and batted maturely to feature in two healthy partnerships to help Cuts reach a respectable score.

First, he put on a fifth-wicket, 49-run partnership with Antonio Darrell before the latter skied one to third man for 26 with the score on 86. Sergio Raynor then joined Burrows and the two put on a team-high, unbeaten 58-run partnership to close out the Cuts innings for 144 in their allotted 20 overs.

Burrows finished 51 not out from 39 balls which included three fours and three sixes. Raynor was 15 not out.

“I had a good innings today,” said Burrows. “I took my time and batted myself in.

“It was a big difference facing the domestic bowling then the international pace I just came from, so I stayed focused to put some runs on the board.”

Samir Tavares was the pick of Bridge bowlers with two for 18 runs from three overs.

Bridge needed 7.25 runs per over in their allotted 20 overs but lost opener Neil Thakur for a golden duck as he swung hard at the first ball he faced only to be cleaned bowled by captain Kwasi James.

Stewards Shaun Riley and Noel Woods patiently went about chasing their target but fell behind the asking run rate. Bridge were 31 for one after the six over power play and 62 for one at the halfway mark.

The 63-run partnership was finally broken when Woods ran himself out for 15. Riley had dominated the partnership with 42.

He brought up his 50 with a straight drive over the sightscreen at long off as wickets fell around him. He carried the score to 100 before being eighth man out going for the boundary and was caught off the bowling of James for a game-high 65 hitting four fours and four sixes in a losing cause.

Bridge were soon skittled all out for 117 with Riley and Woods the only Bridge players to reach double figures.

Captain James and Sher Maur Gomes were the pick of the Cuts bowlers with figures of three for 20 and three for 21 respectively.
