Just one athlete tested positive for an Illicit drug breach according to the Bermuda Sport Anti-Doping Authority annual report released today.

The report by the Auditor-General, on behalf of BSADA, and in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Agency, outlined the results of the first full fiscal year of operation under the World Anti-Doping Code from January 2021 and ending in March of this year.

As part of the Illicit Drug Programme, in which 101 tests were carried out by BSADA across nine sports – football (32), sailing (20), cricket (11), cycling (11), volleyball (10), lawn tennis (8), bowling (7) aquatics (1) and archery (1) – between April 2021 and March 2022, there was one recorded breach for cannabis.

Bermudian athletes from eight sports were also tested while in and out of competition from April 2021 to March 2022, with a total of 37 blood and urine samples collected by six different worldwide agencies including BSADA.

Of those samples, only five were collected inside of competition within athletics, while the remaining tests were taken outside of competition time from athletes competing in aquatics, cycling, equestrian, sailing, triathlon, Paralympic sport and rowing.

There was one Adverse Analytical Finding recorded, but this did not result in an anti-doping rule violation as the athlete was entitled to, and was granted, a retroactive Therapeutic Use Exemption certificate.

There were also four Whereabouts Failures recorded against Registered Testing Pool athletes and five Filing Faults against National Testing Pool athletes.

During that time period, BSADA reviewed its risk assessment and test pools, with two athletes being added to National Test Pool 1 in January. There are currently five athletes in the Registered Test Pool and seventeen in the National Testing Pool. Athletes can be removed or added to the pools at any time.
