A government programme to help young people build horticultural skills is now accepting applications, the Ministry of Public Works has announced.

The annual skills development programme offers students technical skills, as well as lessons on first aid, interview skills, budgeting and what to expect while in the workplace.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said: “The skills development programme represents an excellent opportunity for young people to gain valuable lifelong skills while reducing the unemployment rate among young people.

“We hope to instil sound values that will help participants to develop within the programme, making them more employable for the workforce.”

The programme runs for nine months and trains applicants, aged between 16 and 35, in the field of horticulture and helping them find employment once completed.

The skills development programme last year resulted in five students being hired full-time by the Department of Parks.

The curriculum also encourages participants to give back to the community by offering services based off of the skills they acquire.

Anyone interested in applying can receive a form from the front desk of the Bermuda Industrial Union or Department of Parks, or by e-mailing sdpbermuda@gmail.com.

The deadline for applications is January 27. Spaces are limited.
