Hundreds sign up for walk to raise money for cancer charity Pals

A charity dedicated to helping those with cancer is taking to the streets this weekend for an annual fundraising walk.

The 35th annual Pals walk will take place on Sunday, raising donations to provide medical care, equipment and supplies for cancer patients in Bermuda.

A spokeswoman for the charity said that so far more than 880 people have registered to take part in the event with the goal of raising $70,000.

Colleen English De Grilla, the executive director of Pals, said: “There are more than 300 new cancer diagnoses annually in Bermuda, which is why it’s so vitally important for us to have the community’s support.

“Each donation — be it from individuals, corporations or foundations — allows us to ensure that cancer patients and their families can access crucial support free of charge.”

This year’s event will be supported by Clarien Bank, which serves as the lead sponsor, along with supporting sponsors CG Insurance and Butterfield & Vallis.

Michael DeCouto, the chief digital and marketing officer at Clarien Bank, said: “We are pleased to once again partner with Pals to support the incredible work they do on the island.

“With a legacy of serving for over 40 years, which includes more than 4,000 annual home visits and over 200 active patients, we can see the positive difference Pals provides to the Bermuda community.

“We are excited to share that many of Clarien’s employees, family and friends will participate in the 2023 event, and we encourage the entire community to join in on this important fundraiser.”

Participants in the event will be able to take part in 3K, 5K or 10K walks, all of which will set out from Pals headquarters on Point Finger Road and continue along the Railway Trail.

The event will also include a “virtual” participation option, which allows walkers to set out from any place at any time and still qualify for the prize draw.

Participants must register before the event with adult registration fees set at $30 and child registration for those between the ages of 5 and 15 set at $15. There is no fee for children under the age of 5.

Those who are interested in signing up can do so at Pals headquarters until 4.30pm on Friday or online at www.racedayworld.com until noon on Saturday.

Kit collection has already begun, with individuals able to pick up their kits from Pals headquarters between 10am and 6pm on Friday or between 9am and noon on Saturday.
