Sebastian Pukk shines but Bermuda fall to Costa Rica

Bermuda’s Junior Davis Cup team lost 2-1 to Costa Rica

Bermuda’s young tennis players were left disappointed after another narrow defeat in the Junior Davis Cup in Guatemala on Tuesday.

After an opening defeat against Dominican Republic on Monday, hopes were high of a victory against Costa Rica and the team got off to a flying start when Sebastian Pukk beat Julian Garnier 6-2, 6-0 to win the crucial first singles game.

Captain Vinny Boisvert was beaten in straight sets by Yoshi Nashiki in straight sets to again set up a crucial winner-takes-all doubles rubber, but the team of Pukk and Zach McGuire were beaten in straight sets by Garnier and Alberto Mora.

Coach Steve Bean needed to raise morale after their second loss of the tournament with the team hoping to end the tournament on a high against Curacao on Wednesday.

“It was a tough day and the guys are a little down because we felt this was winnable,” Bean said.

“Tomorrow, we play against Curacao and we have promised ourselves that we are not losing against them so we will see.”

Bean did reserve praise for Pukk, who produced some superb tennis.

“We let him go into the singles first and he put in an outstanding performance,” Bean said.

“He made very few errors and got the team off to an outstanding start.

“Vincent Boisvert played the next match and lost 6-2, 6-1, so we were again tied going into the doubles. Vinny was down to play in that but he was not able to, so we played Sebastian and Zach.

“They were in it in both sets and, although they lost 6-2, 6-2, we all agreed afterwards that it was a fixture we could have won.”
