Upsets galore in National Squash Championships

Plenty of action on the squash courts last night

Day three of the Gnosis National Squash Championships featured a string of upsets with Taylor Carrick and Nick Kyme both knocked out of the men’s open.

Carrick was beaten 3-0 by Kristian Muldoon with Kyme also falling in straight sets to the talented Anaya Smith. Pre-tournament favourites Noah Browne and Micah Franklin both progressed in straight sets, beating Armin de Weerdt and Stephen Smith respectively.

In the women’s main draw Eilidh Franklin was an impressive winner over Rose Paulos with Samantha Spencer, Izzy White and Joann Bielby all making it into the next round.

The men’s B competition featured two epic five-set matches with Malcolm Woodley beating Mark James 14-12 in the decider with Eli Carpol knocking out Andrew Bonner 11-9 in the fifth. Elijah Simmons and Brendon Fourie had things far easier with wins in straight sets.

Brett Murray, Nick Southern and brothers Ethan and Owen Rosorea are into the next round in the Men’s C competition.

There was also an upset in the Men’s Over-60 competition when Tony Riker beat former club champion Colin Alexander in four sets with Tony Prentice overcoming John Stout.

In the women’s veteran competition Joann Bielby had enough in the tank to beat Samantha Spencer.
