The Sargasso Sea

A Bermudian hopes to share her passion for protecting marine species at a lecture on Sunday.

Fae Sapsford, a marine research fellow with the Sargasso Sea Commission, will be speaking at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

The talk is the second instalment in this year’s Island Sustainable Ocean Strategies series.

The commission, established in 2014, aims to protect the area and the endangered oceanic species in the sea.

Ms Sapsford’s interest in the Sargasso Sea began when the commission hosted an event at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo when she was in middle school.

She said: “I was really inspired by that, because it was all about how we can govern these areas of the ocean that do not belong to anybody, so I always had that in the back of my mind.

“I ended up studying something totally unrelated in university, but came back to work with the commission after I had finished my master’s and I was very happy to do that.”

Ms Sapsford is pursuing a PhD in maritime affairs at the World Maritime University, with a focus on “strengthening the stewardship of the Sargasso Sea”.

She does not believe that individuals should worry about making significant environmental change, as larger organisations bear a lot of that responsibility.

She said: “One thing Bermudians can do to protect the environment would be to enjoy it, engage with it and learn more about the natural spaces they love.

“That kind of appreciation and inquiry inspires a sense of stewardship for natural places, I think."

Tickets for the talk, which will begin at 3pm, are $10 for BUEI members, $15 for non-members and free for students with a valid ID.
