Guishard the centre of attention
They say everybody enjoys five minutes of fame and that certainly seems to be the case for one member of Bermuda’s Pan-Am delegation.
Enter Chef De Mission Philip Guishard, who has become somewhat of an unlikely celebrity in Rio after enjoying the cameraman’s attention during the Games’ Opening Ceremony.
When swimmer Keira Aitken had the honour of standard-bearer bestowed upon her, she could have hardly imagined Guishard would steal her thunder during the 42-nations parade.
For the image of a red Bermuda shorted Guishard was not only beamed onto the two giant screens at the packed Maracana Stadium, but also into households across the city.
And it appears the amiable Guishard certainly caught the attention of a few eagle-eyed viewers since.
Firstly, his chef de mission counterparts who playfully ribbed Guishard the next day during their daily gathering noted his appearance.
A few hours later a hotel concierge looked almost star-struck when he enthusiastically informed a bashful Guishard that he had also spotted his brief (but obviously memorable) TV appearance.
Guishard was later overheard commenting on his newfound notoriety, conceding sadly it had not coincided with any newfound monetary gain!
