The Bermuda Regiment Cadet Corps welcomed Governor Sir John Vereker to their Darrell Island camp yesterday.

The youngsters, aged 14 to 18, are in the midst of an annual two-week exercise that has seen them participate in activities ranging from swimming to live firing exercises. Sir John — the head of the Cadet Corps — watched the 27 recruits take part in kayaking and orienteering, and took a keen interest in their camping arrangements.

Despite the rainy weather, the cadets were in good spirits and revelling in the outdoors lifestyle. Brittany Wilson, 16, from Pembroke, said she spent Monday night practising patrolling and ambushing — and has particularly enjoyed the physical training each morning.

“I enjoy coming to camp because it’s challenging, brings your fitness level up and gives you discipline, and you also have fun at the same time,” she said.

Irving Ford, 12, from Pembroke, is on his third Cadet Corps camp. He described the different exercises he has participated as “really good,” adding: “I like the military and might join the Regiment.”

Cadets train once a week during the school year. They train on weekends roughly every two months throughout the year, and finish with the two-week training camp each July.
