Swans soar in Atlanta

Vernon Tankard and Jenene Douglas led the way for a party of Swan’s Running Club athletes who travelled to Atlanta to take part in the USA’s biggest 10K road race, the Peachtree 10K.

The event attracted 55,000 competitors — making it the second largest 10K running race in the world.

It was held in high temperatures and humidity on a hilly 6.2 mile course. The sheer volume of competitors meant a wait of up to one and a half hours for back-markers to cross the start line.

Tankard was the swiftest of the Swan’s men in 38 minutes 44 seconds, which was good enough to keep a healthy chunk of daylight between himself and next club runner Mark Albouy, who ran 40.06.

Among the women, Douglas proved the pick of the bunch in 47.40 — ahead of Rashida Abbott in 49.58.

There was little chance of a Bermuda athlete catching the overall winners however, as the winner of the 38th annual Peachtree 10K was Kenyan Martin Irungu who achieved a world-class time of 27.59.

Other Swan’s runners who finished the race were Terence Douglas clocking 44.54, Jewell Eve in 50.37 and Raziyah Swan who crossed the line in 56.21.
